Youth Lessons
Swim Conditioning for Kids
This class is designed for children who have completed the level 6 requirement but are not quite ready for a swim team yet. Many parents would like to try out a swim team prior to joining one, and this is a great opportunity for them to do so without the team commitment. This class is designed around children having a working knowledge of the four major competitive strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, and butterfly). Swim conditioning principles will be emphasized during this course. Workouts will be designed to improve aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Paticipants will gain basic knowledge in exercise physiology and training techniques and continue with a fitness program or swim team beyond this training. Efficiency and endurance will be stressed. Participants entering this class should be comfortable swimming at least 200 yards consistently.
Infant/Toddler/Preschool Lessons (IPAP)
Lessons for this age group (6 months to 5 years) are designed to help young children become more comfortable in and around the water and prepares them for youth lessons. This program is not designed to teach this age group to swim or survive in the water on their own, but to give parents useful information/techniques to orient their children to the water and supervise water activities safely. Parents are required to participate in the water in this class (one adult per child), but are not required to have any special swimming skills. We ask that all children not toilet-trained wear tightly fitting rubber or plastic pants or swim diapers.
Advanced Preschool Lessons (AP)
This class is designed to bridge the gap between the Infant/Toddler/Preschool Lessons and the Youth Lessons (levels 1-6). Advanced Preschool (AP) is for children approximately 3-5 years old with advanced swimming skills. Such skills would include a high level of comfort in and under water and some ability to move, unassisted and/or assisted by instructor, through the water on their front and/or back. Parents do not participate at this level. If you feel your child is too young for youth lessons and too strong for preschool lessons, this may be the class for you.
Youth Lessons (Levels 1-6)
American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program is designed for all levels of swimmers, from no swimming skills, starting at age 5, to advanced swimming skills. The main objective is safety in, on and around water while providing a positive learning experience. The six levels offered in the Learn-to-Swim Program are designed to help students feel comfortable in the water and learn the fundamentals.
- Levels 1, 2: develop basic swimming skills and strokes
- Levels 3, 4: refine existing basic strokes and introduce more advanced strokes
- Levels 5, 6: safety skills are stressed throughout all six levels
