80s Highlights

The 80s brought about events like the demolition Burlin Wall, the identification of AIDS, and the Big Gulp. Disco was replaced by heavy metal, alternative and the introduction of "rap." The Iran/Iraq war had more than its fair share of news minutes and President Ronald Reagan had his hands full, especially after the attempt on his life by gunman, John Hinckley Jr. Accomplishments included the eradication of smallpox, the identification of the AIDS virus, and the marriage of Diana and Prince Charles. Tragedies included the death of Indirah Ghandi and the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger.

In sports, Pete Rose was banned from baseball in 1989; Ben Johnson broke the 100-meter record, and subsequently tested positive for banned substances; Mike Tyson becomes the youngest main to win the heavyweight title; Mary Decker set six world records in track and field, over 600 Major League baseball games were cancelled due to the player's strike.
