2000 to Present Highlights
Affectionately referred to as "Y2K ," the
year 2000 brought in a host of changes for Campus Rec and
the world at large. As far as students on this campus were
concerned, computers were as common as toasters and microwaves,
and had always been around. In the sports world, the
new millennium has seenTiger Woods become the first golfer
to hold all four major titles consecutively and Lance Armstrong
win his sixth Tour de France.
For Campus Rec,
computers have been just one of a host of new tools to
be corralled. Following the group fitness craze of the
90's, a return to more 'holistic' approaches were being
established. A rekindling of eastern wellness practices
were being incorporated to provide more of a mind-and-body
unification. Traditional ways of thinking, ie. Intramural
Sports were giving way to more holistic aspects with a
futuristic flavor.
In an effort to find out how we could
become a more viable, and valuable, contributor to students
on campus, Campus Rec approached the student constituency
to find out what 'they' were looking for in their day-to-day
health and well-being.
From
the Intramural Champion perspective, the Wall of Fame moved
from the hallowed halls of IMPE to the Campus Rec website,
rather sporadically.
Here are the highlights to date:
•
A consulting firm, Brailsford & Dunlavey, was hired
to assist Campus Rec in determining whether a
renovation expansion project was feasible and necessary.
An extensive report to the university administration
showed that Campus Rec was not only in dire need for
additional space for the size of the campus, but that
numerous student groups, that were surveyed, poled and
interviewed, were strongly in favor of such a change.
•
Students voted, by majority, in 2001 to increase the
general fee which was designated to fund the renovation
of approximately 250,000 sq. ft. of existing recreational
space and the addition of approximately 190,000 sq.
ft. of new recreational space at both IMPE and CRCE.
• IMPE
Phase I renovation was completed in January 2005. "The
IMPE East Wing" is an extension of Gym 1 with an extra 10,000 sq.
ft. of cardio, selectorized and free weight space, with
locker rooms to accommodate daily users.
• A 'One Stop Shop' area
was developed at IMPE, combining previous signups from
the 172 office and the lobby's 140 space to offer membership
sales, exercise passes, intramural sign-ups, court reservations,
and more.
• CRCE
portion of Phase I was completed in March 2005. Housed
in this facility are: 1/8 mile track; 10,000
sq. ft. strength and conditioning space; 3-court basketball/volleyball
gym; multi-activity court for indoor soccer, floor
hockey, roller hockey; 2 multi-purpose rooms; 3 racquetball
courts; leisure pool/spa; full service locker rooms
