Welcome
When it comes to sports history,
Campus Rec has it's fair share for UI grads on the Champaign-Urbana
campus.
Our
Field of Dreams
The enduring mindset
for college-age students is that the world is their 'unmitigated'
oyster. Forget the monumental task of becoming a contributing
member of society. Life in the 'college scene' is the stuff
that movies are made...and even dreams. If everyone today
had could just have a quarter of the resiliency, the determination
and the fearlessness we had in our collegiate days, we'd
all be irrepressible. But more than that. Those days molded
our adult character in ways that we probably still don't
comprehend. And Campus Rec holds a special place in the
hearts of many UI grads. In fact, we've conceiveably provided
many students at the U of I with at least one of their
Top Ten moments in campus life. The comradery, the inspiration,
the teamwork, the blood-sweat-and-tears, and the good plain
fun. That's what Campus Rec symbolizes to many who have
trod the halls of IMPE, Kenney, Huff and Freer. Those who
ate the dirt at Lincoln and Florida (the Complex) and dodged
the trees at Stadium Terrace (now the Multiplex) know exactly
what we're talking about.

Looking back...
Intramural Sports is the 'beacon'
of Campus Rec. Just beyond "PE" class, Intramural Sports
offered non-sanctioned athletes the opportunity to compete
in the sport of their choosing. They may have been star
athletes in their high school, or club players looking
for looking for some playtime. Fraternities held up a large
part of the Intramural population, but there was plenty
of Res Hall participation and, depending on the sport,
an ever-increasing female population.
Early records show sports include
the tried-and-true flag football, basketball, softball
and volleyball options. But later entries include soccer,
wrestling, tennis, hockey and even broomball. Over the
years IMs had novelty competitions like The Triva Bowl,
Euchre Tournaments, and, most recently the HotShot Competition.
