Climbing - tie-in and belay techniques

Harness
____ Waist belt goes above hip bone
____ Buckles get doubled-back
____ Fit is snug for 2 fingers in leg loop

Tie-in
____ Figure 8 (primary knot)
____ Fisherman (secondary knot)
____ Tie-in through leg loop AND waist belt
____ Check belayer’s buckle and carabiner (by squeezing)
____ Use correct commands to communicate with belayer

Belay
____ Clip (and lock) carabiner through leg loop AND belay loop
____ Check climber’s knots and harness
____ Use correct commands to communicate with climber
____ Remain focused on climber
____ Never take brake hand off rope
____ Never allow a dangerous amount of slack in rope
____ Lower climber slow and smooth

Belay commands
____ “On Belay” says Climber, then climber and belayer check each other’s equipment
____ “Belay On” says Belayer, confirming that both climber and
belayer are safe and ready to climb.

____ “Climbing” says climber and is ready to climb. (Belayer takes up existing slack.)

____ “Climb On” says belayer and gives the final approval for
the climber to start climbing

____ “Slack” says climber. The rope is too tight on the climber.
(Belayer feeds some rope out.)
____ “Take” says climber, the climber is at the top & wants to hang on the rope. (Belayer locks off & lowers climber.)
