Basic Climbing Principles*

Maintain three points of contact.
This will maximize your balance and stability. However, on difficult routes, you might be compelled to use less than 3 points due to a missing foot/hand hold.

* Climb with your FEET/LEGS.
The leg muscles are stronger than the arm muscles. Therefore, you
should balance over your feet. Remember: you can do more squats
than pull-ups.

* Keep arms straight.
Whenever possible keep the arms straight, especially at resting stops. The arm muscles get ‘pumped’ faster when they are in a bent position. Always try to keep the arms straight and relaxed.

* Body position.
This is the key in good climbing. Always try to maintain a balanced body position. Try to keep your hips as close to the wall as possible so your weight can be used to your advantage. Use whatever method to give you a sense of balance, e.g. flagging a leg in mid-air to shift your center of gravity over your feet.

* Think while you climb.
Strive to be a thinking climber. Try to complete the climb in the
most energy efficient way possible.

* Have Fun.
Remember these basics and have fun!
