OUTDOORS IN THE COLD SEASON

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
1. HEAT LOSS - 40% from head/30% body core/
20% hands and wrists/10% feet
2. ENERGY NEEDS
3. TIME - day length
4. TRAVEL

HEAT LOSS - THINK C O L D :
YOU LOOSE/MAINTAIN HEAT THRU YOUR CLOTHING
1. C - KEEP CLEAN ... CLEAN CLOTHES CAN BREATH
2. O - AVOID OVERHEATING ... VENTILATE , OPEN
JACKET,TAKE OFF LAYER OR HAT,ETC.
3. L - WEAR LAYERS ... AIR SPACE, LOOSE FITTING
4. D - KEEP DRY ... WET WICKS AWAY HEAT (SNOW ON
CLOTHES,PERSPIRATION,PRECIPITATION) ...
IF COLD - OPEN JACKET AND COVER EXTREMITIES.
IF MILD - WEAR LESS LAYERS,VENT THRU HEAD,WRISTS AND HANDS.

ENERGY NEEDS
TO KEEP WARM AND/OR WHEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS MORE DIFFICULT ...YOU NEED TO RESTORE ENERGY THRU PROPER DIET WITH ESSENTIAL NUTRITIONAL ELEMENTS.
1. FATS - ENERGY COMPONENTS ARE TIME RELEASED
ALLOWING THE BODY TO GENERATE HEAT AND STRENGTH AS THEY ARE REQUIRED ... 1/4 POUND PER
PERSON PER DAY (ESPECIALLY BEFORE SLEEPING)
2. CARBOHYDRATES - FOR IMMEDIATE ENERGY AND
CONTINUING SUPPLY OF INTERNAL HEAT ... SUGARS
AND STARCHES ( EAT IN MORNING)
3. PROTEINS - TO MAKE NEW CELLS
4. WATER - DRINK A LOT TO PREVENT DEHYDRATION ,
NEED TO DRINK ONE GALLON PER DAY IN COLD
CONDITIONS.

TIME
DAY LENGTH IS SHORTER DURING THE COLD SEASON , MUST ADJUST SCHEDULE . DO NOT WASTE MORNING LIGHT.
TRAVEL EARLY, STOP EARLY SO TIME TO SET UP CAMP. TAKE A GOOD LIGHT SOURCE.

TRAVEL
GENERALLY TRAVEL IN COLD IS MORE DIFFICULT AND
SLOWER, SHORTER TRAVEL TIME. PLAN TO TRAVEL OR BE ACTIVE MOST OF THE DAY TO KEEP WARM AND OCCUPY
TIME. TRAILS ARE MORE HAZZARDOUS BECAUSE OF
POSSIBLE SNOW, ICE, FLOOD, ETC.
