OBJECTIVES:
1. This Basic Canoeing course is designed primarily to reduce the number of drownings and accidents associated with the use of canoes and to provide an opportunity for acquiring certain canoe handling skills.
2. The specific objectives of the course are to teach:
a. safe canoe handling techniques and skills
b. self-rescue skills
c. skills to use in helping or rescuing others who are in trouble
3. Students should develop control and knowledge necessary to paddle a canoe in the stern or bow position and solo.
4. Students should know how to control the canoe and be aware
of environmental conditions like wind, currents, waves and river
obstacles and how they affect the boat.

REQUIRED:
Selected readings/handouts/websites assigned by the instructor.
Participation in all class activities.
Students are responsible for all materials presented in class, including
announcements about changes in course procedures, times and dates.
Activity fee: The activity fee of $50.00 is for equipment, facilities,
and supplies used throughout the 8 weeks of the course. This fee
will be charged to your University student account or pay by check
to the instructor, not refundable after 2 weeks from start of class.

Academic dishonesty will result in a failing course grade (F).

* Tardiness (10minutes late to class) will result in loss of 2 points. A student will receive a 3-point reduction for observing the class if unable to participate.

COURSE CONTENT:
1. Water ability check: attempt to tread water 5 minutes and then swim 10 meters to the side of the pool; attempt to put on correctly a PFD in the water and then swim to the side of the pool; attempt to be in deep water while clothed and maintain a survival position for 5 minutes.
2. Nomenclature for canoe, paddle, and other basic nautical terms such as leeward, starboard, port, and windward.
3. Boating and in the water safety skills: survival swimming, flotation, extension rescues, self-rescue and common sense, changing positions, swamping a canoe, entering a swamped canoe, canoe over canoe rescue, and rescue of a tired swimmer.
4. Basic strokes: forward/power stroke, reverse, J-stroke, sweep, reverse sweep, draw, push-away, bow rudder, cross bow rudder, sculling, braces.
5. Work in bow and stern, and paddling positions (two knees and sit position).
6. Solo paddling and adaptation of strokes.
7. Techniques for paddling in current, wind, river, about obstacles.
8. Techniques for carrying and portaging canoes.
9. Techniques for boarding, debarking, launching, and docking a canoe.
