Snorkel / Scuba - INFO SHEET

Mask - the most important piece of gear

sniff test - to test for the right fit of a mask hold mask against the face, close mouth, inhale through the nose, does mask stay on??
good sucsion means good mask fit, no areas for water to leak in.
tight but not too tight.
waist high in water lean over to test mask, no leaks.

seeing - if you need to see to drive, you need to see to dive.
contact leans ? wear them under the mask.
you can also purchase a mask with perscription lens.

clear pressure - val salva pressure on the ears at lower depths.
should never feel pressure, need to adjust

anti-fog mask - clean mask with Crest toothpaste or liquid defogger when first purchase .... wet mask, then rub on a little toothpaste
and rinse once for defogging.

Snorkel - long breathing tube

snorkel position - snorkel on the left, regulator for scuba tank comes
over shoulder from the right
purge system in bottom of the tube (valve on bottom)

Fins - foot gear for more power, propulsion when kicking

fins for snorkeling - smaller, lighter pair for snorkling, maybe full heel

fins for scuba diving - bigger, heavier, stiffer pair for scuba for more kick propulsion because of the extra drag of the scuba tanks and gear... and currents and waves

adjustable fin - for better fit, can use with booties

booties - good to protect feet and when wearing fins / warmth
when wearing on shore/land walk backwards so do not trip.

Snorkeling vest - light, easy to wear ... blow up/inflate to give a little floation if tired, distressed or far out from shore.
bright color for visibility

Tanks - scuba - tank 40-45 lbs
filled with compressed air - just regular plain air
regulators / gauages / 2nd regulator for others/safety (called octopus)

Buoyancy Control Device or BC
BC - for establishing neutral buoyancy - to float at levels and to stay off the bottom, so do not stir up stuff on the bottom.
for use as PFD on the surface - positive buoyancy.
for use to help float to the surface

Exposure Suit
Body suit to protect the diver from
exposure and cold temperatures
injuries and scrapes /cuts from coral, rock, shell, etc. under the
surface

floatation - most suits help give the diver boyancy

types - full-body, shorties, farmer johns, etc.

Safety
International Distress Signal - mask worn on top of head
Buddy system - work as a team, watch out for each other
1 up and 1 down
Green --lime green/vision green for best visibility

In the water activities :
Giant stride entry - hold mask to face, step off (large step), no jumping

Other entries :
front roll - roll over frontwards
back roll - roll backwards (sit back)

Clearing snorkel - exhale thru tube; go under fill tube, come up to just
under the surface and blow out.

Clear mask - tilt the bottom of the mask out, lean head back a little bit while exhaling through the nose. this air forces the water in the mask out.

Flutter kick - leg straight, very slight knee bend, large kicks at the hip.
arms to the sides/back (for the most part) so can glide through the water easier.

Equipment care -
rinse your gear off with fresh water after each use
mark your gear to keep track of it
