backpack - well organized , balanced over hips....for
easier hiking on marked, open trails pack heavy items high in pack and
close to back so weight goes down frame to hips
for rough hiking when going cross-country, bushwacking,
rocky, or difficult terrain pack the weight a little lower & centered
in pack for better balance
correct fit of pack - comfort and efficiency

group of 3-4 best
group roles - desired by some for efficiency....
leader(s) - total responsibility
guide - sets pace, stops, starts, selects route - 1st
logger - keeps records, times, dates, miles, breaks
the sweep - assists, keeps group together conserve energy -
carry light loads - take only what is needed
start early, get to camp early keep a steady pace, your own pace - rhythm

stand erect with slight forward lean, try not to stop,
go slow, lock step ñ step up and flatten the foot while
locking the downhill knee, this"rest step"lets muscles
rest as you work hard to go uphill.

jam/jar,
tie boots to avoid toes from hitting front of boot

hike, camp, rest, play on durable surfaces
stay on the trail, hike in the middle of the trail, do not make new trails,
do not cut switchbacks (it causes erosion), do not move or damage trail
markers
use old campsites/travel in limited areas in camp
obtain a permit when required
use a stove... limit/eliminate campfire use
know how to read a map and use a compass, know first aid
always carry the "10 essentials" and tell someone where you
are going and when you will return
nature calls - do not pollute water sources,
harm nature
protect your food/keep it from animals-hang/keep clean camp
protect wildlife and natural/cultural/ historical features
enjoy from a distance, leave what you find, take pictures
