HINTS ON PLANNING A TRIP :

THINGS TO CONSIDER - A successful outdoor adventure depends heavily on trip planning and preparation. The following list is a guide to consider as you plan for your next adventure.

GROUP MEMBERS
____ do members have the necessary skills and knowledge?
____ do members have the necessary experience, ability and fitness?
____ do individual goals coincide?
____ are members compatible?
____ are medical histories known?
____ are predetermined rules agreed upon?
____ is there a designated leader?
____ who knows basic first aid and CPR?

LOCATION OF TRIP
____ where to go?...state or national park?...national forest, scenic riverway, trail?
____ type of area visited?...desert...mountains...wooded...water
____ type of terrain?...rocky, flat, sandy, hilly, wet, high altitude, etc.
____ distance to location...50-90 miles...175-250 miles...350-500 miles...plus
____ what type of transportation?....number of vehicles?....fuel?
____ where to park the vehicle?...is it safe?...is a shuttle back to vehicle needed?

TIME, SEASON, WEATHER
____ total number of days for trip.
____ time of travel to and from trip location.
____ miles hiking, canoeing, biking, etc. per day on the trail....loop trail?
____ season of trip...spring...summer...fall...winter.
____ off-season trip is less crowded, better routes available, less expensive.
____ season conditions...winter/snow, shorter days, slower travel...spring & fall/colder, less insects, wetter...summer/hot, insects, long days
____ altitude and weather.
____ what is the availability of drinking water?...locations?....purify-yes.

SITE REGULATIONS
____ know the rules and regulations of the park, area, river, etc. & abide by them.
____ are there group size limits?
____ are there equipment requirements?
____ are there experience and ability requirements?
____ do you need a permit?...can you reserve?...when can you reserve?
____ do you need a fire permit, fish/hunt license, etc.?

MONEY FOR EXPENSES
____ are expenses shared?

____ does menu meet group needs?....vegetarians?....high altitude?
____ is the weight worth the carry?

TRIP PLAN/EMERGENCY INFO
____ TRAVEL PLAN to and from your location...rest stops?...fuel/food stops?....include day and dates.... and locations if possible.
____ TRAIL PLAN - map out destinations for each day, number of miles traveled,
campsite locations, water locations, dangerous areas, scenic areas of
interest, emergency routes, alternative routes, etc....include day and dates.
____ EMERGENCY INFO SHEET ...general medical history in case of accident, allergies, allergic to medications, taking any medicatons, who to contact in case of emergency...parents/friend phone and address.
____ take health insurance card, AAA road assistance card, etc.
____ does the group have a first aid kit?....repair kits?
____ list of EMERGENCY CONTACTS and how to contact them....medical facilities phone and address, ranger/park phone and address, sheriff/police phone and address.
____ TRIP INFO....leave an itinerary with a responsible person and a park authority....include your departure and return dates and location, include your route, destination, and campsites (dates), include group member's names, phone numbers and addresses, and include emergency contacts.
