ARC
FAQs
Why is the renovation necessary?
The present facility is inadequate, inefficient and not
relevant to most students today. That is to say that though the
structure is still sound, the infrastructure (heating, ventilation,
power and more) have proved incapable of handling our additional
and future needs. Built in the late 60's and early 70's, the facility
was set up primarily for physical education classes. Most of today's
students are familiar with recreation and fitness centers with
more current design considerations and adaptations. We hope this
renovation will prove to go beyond those familiar aspects and offer
even greater ammenities.
What will the ARC offer?
• 155-seat auditorium • instructional kitchen •
35-ft. climbing wall • 23,000 sq. ft. of multipurpose space •
1/6-mile track (3 lanes) •
five additional basketball courts (for a total of 14) • meeting
spaces and expanded lobby. Prior to the renovation,
there were 14 treadmills and 14 ellipticals: upon completion of
the project, the four levels of strength and conditioning space
will hold 70 treadmills and ellipticals, and over 100 stationary
bikes and free-weight stations.
When will the ARC open?
The current schedule for the renovation process,
agreed to by contracting units, is 24-27 months. We are cautiously
optimistic that the process will allow us to open in
summer 2008.
Are there lockers available in the East Wing?
There are coin lockers available in the fitness area
and digital lockers in each of the men’s and women’s
locker rooms. Patrons may bring their own locks for daily use
of these lockers.

Usage FAQs
Where can I lap swim?
Lap swim hours are extended at Freer and Kenney Pools. We also have an
agreement with the Urbana
Park District for reduced membership rates for UI students and Campus Rec
members. See
Facility schedule for availability.
What is the best time
to get in a workout at CRCE or the East Wing?
Early mornings are good; especially at the East Wing. Other less crowded times
are 9-11am, 1:30-3pm during the week and weekend mornings. These times apply
to basketball use too (Kenney Gym is also available).
Where can I play racquetball?
When construction is completed, the ARC will offer 12 racquetball
courts in addition to CRCE's three courts. To get a court during
the renovation, try early mornings, and be sure to call to reserve
a court.
What's your children's policy during the renovation?
Campus Rec recognizes that many students, faculty and staff
have families. CRCE has designated Family Hours: Friday, 4-8pm,
and Sat/Sun, Noon-8pm.
Freer FAQs
Are
there lockers to rent at Freer?
Campus Rec doesn't operate the Freer locker facility; the department of Kinesiology
