The first phase of our project began with the
renovation and expansion of our CRCE (Campus Recreation Center-East)
facility. Located behind Freer Hall, with access from sidewalks
off Nevada, Goodwin and Dorner Streets, the existing facility
has 35,000 square feet including one multi-activity gym with
three basketball courts and a free weight/cardio fitness center.
The expansion has increased the overall space to 110,000
square feet.
The renovation of IMPE, now called the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), began after the opening
of the newly renovated CRCE facility. Located on Peabody between
First and Fourth Streets. The expansion process will
create an additional 120,000 square feet of space to provide
340,000 square feet overall. Originally completed in 1971,
the facility was a premiere recreation center for its
time.
The renovation and expansion of CRCE and
the ARC will provide the University of Illinois campus with a state-of-the-art
recreation system incorporating 'student center' amenities.
