ONE-on-ONE with
Doug Boyer
Position: Assistant Director – Facility Management
Education: BS Kinesiology; MS Sports Management, UIUC
What was your first recreational position?
Student Supervisor for Campus Recreation.
Your first professional position?
Assistant Director – Intramural Sports and Special Events.
What are your current job responsibilities?
I work in the area of Facility Management overseeing student staffs at the IMPE, Kenney, Freer and Huff facilities.
What is the best part about working for Campus Rec?
The environment. And when I say environment, I am referring to every aspect and component that makes up what I have learned to appreciate as Campus Recreation. The people, the facilities, the services and resources, the culture, . . . everything!
What is the most challenging aspect of working for Campus Rec?
Remembering the reason all students, whether they be participants or employees on my staff, are here at the University of Illinois. Although I strongly believe, and am committed to, the role that Campus Recreation plays in the overall development of students on our campus, we have to constantly remain aware of the academic achievement our students are pursuing.
What are the challenges of working closely with student staff?
The daily realization of just how far removed I am with each passing year from the place they are at in their lives.
What is your most memorable moment while working at Campus Rec?
There have been so many and with the near completion of the first phase of our renovation project, I can only begin to imagine the ones that lie ahead.
What do you consider to be your best professional accomplishment?
The positive impact you can have on the lives of students, being a part of their development while they are immersed in the college experience, is an opportunity I cherish every day.
What are your future professional goals?
I consider myself so fortunate to have been a part of this staff for more than 12 years, and to know the enthusiasm and excitement that will be generated by the completion of the renovation project, why would one choose to be anywhere else.
What is your personal fitness goal?
I ran my first marathon in 2003, but I have a goal of running one more on my upcoming 40th birthday in two years. Recently, I have challenged myself to re-think my approach to my exercise regimen, and I have begun to focus more on wellness, or functional fitness. Raising a family with two young boys, I want to continue to be active in their lives and able to participate in whatever way I can as their own personal fitness goals evolve, develop and take shape.
