Janet Kroencke

Position: Assistant Director – Group Fitness/Wellness

Education: BS, Applied Health Science, Indiana University

How long have you been at Campus Recreation?
I have been working here almost two years.

When did you first become interested in this area?
All my life; I've always been interested in health and wellness.

What was your first fitness position?
I was a group fitness instructor and a gymnastics coach in the early 90s.

What are some of your current main job responsibilities?
I manage the group fitness program, hire and train new instructors. I implement new programs and assist to implement programming for other areas when it relates to fitness.

Do you teach any fitness classes and, which classes are your favorite?
I try to have the student instructors teach most of the classes. I really enjoy the yoga-based classes, but I don't currently teach any. However, I really like all of the classes we offer.

What do you hope your student employees take with them from the job?
I hope that the students take with them the value of their experiences of being part of such a great team as Campus Recreation. I hope they also take with them the knowledge they obtain here as Group Fitness Instructors and implement that knowledge into their personal lives as well as their careers, if they so choose to continue in the Fitness/Wellness industry, and live quality lives.

What new program that you have implemented are you most proud of?
I would have to say yoga because we have opened some new doors for people. A lot of the participants have not been practicing yoga and this is a great way to introduce them to the mind and body wellness that yoga offers.

What is the biggest challenge you face with this position?
I took the job because it is a daily challenge and it inspires me to grow. If I had to pick just one main challenge it would be maintaining a cutting edge fitness program along with maintaining a quality staff. Sometimes it can be a challenge working with the staff and their schedules to try and arrange for training times to keep them up to date.

What are your future fitness/career goals?
To maintain training and education in the Fitness/Wellness industry and to enjoy doing so to any extent I am able throughout my life!

Do you have any secrets to your success of staying in great shape?
Take everything in moderation. Maintain a variety of activities that you enjoy and you will be able to maintain a quality life for a lifetime.
